APPLICATION TO PERFORM IN A PLAY

ACTING APPLICATION DEADLINE:  MARCH 31, 2020

The Newmarket National Ten Minute Play Festival is looking for actors to perform in 2-4 of the 24 ten minute plays produced at this year’s festival which runs July 20-26, 2020.  Each play is performed as an independent production, so actors should be prepared to work with different companies under different directors.  Performances will be at the Old Town Hall Theatre in the town of Newmarket, Ontario.  Newmarket is a 40 minute drive from downtown Toronto.

Auditions will take place in Toronto in early May.  The vision of the Newmarket National Play Festival is to promote the diverse voices and perspectives of artists from every region in Canada.  To that end, The Newmarket National celebrates diversity of all kinds whether in its casting choices or selection of plays for the festival program.

Those who wish to perform in this festival must be available to rehearse in Newmarket, Ontario, from the end of June  through to the end of the performance week   Rehearsals run weekdays (and possibly weekends) from 10:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m., but most actors will have days off between rehearsals during the 22 day rehearsal period.  Each play will be provided with up to 15 hours total rehearsal time.   Actors can expect an average of six hours of rehearsal in a day.   Since limited billeting is available, actors should plan to take advantage of our ride share program or use public transit (see “Getting Here”) to get to Newmarket.

An honorarium, based on a profit sharing model, will be paid to directors, actors, stage managers, designers, etc.  Since the 2017 inception of the NNPF,  100% of the gate receipts have been paid out to shareholders.

We do our best to make the NNPF a welcoming, creative, respectful, and supportive environment for our performers.  Our rehearsals are held in spacious, clean facilities with helpful staff.  In each of our last three seasons,  many Newmarket restaurateurs offered performers up to 20% off meals during their time at the festival.  The shows are well-attended with highly appreciative audiences.

Successful candidates will have a passion for live theatre and a strong belief in the importance of the rehearsal process.  As these are short plays with little or no set, actors have to sustain a depth of character that invests the audience in the truth of an imaginative world.

PLEASE EMAIL YOUR RESUME, DETAILING YOUR ACTING EXPERIENCE TO:  connect@nationalplayfestival.ca

Resumes should include your contact information, and a head shot photo.  If you wish to submit a cover letter, please include it as part of your resume package and not as part of your email.

Candidates under consideration for acting roles will be contacted by email at least three weeks in advance of auditions.  Successful candidates will be notified approximately one week after the conclusion of auditions.
